Driving Around Schools And Campuses
10.31.06 (7:45 pm)   [edit]
There are always rules when it comes to driving. After all, cars and vehicles are considered to be machines that could break and take people’s lives. That is why it is very necessary for the government to make rules and for motorists to follow them.

If you would notice, though, there are rules in driving that remain general. However, there are also rules that are specific. There are some rules when it comes to driving around streets. There are also different rules when it comes to driving in open roads, as well as in parking lots. These are not because the law would like drivers to have a hard time. These are made so as to adapt to the locations.

When driving around schools, universities, and campuses, there also are some rules to follow. If you are a student or you need something in these areas, it is important that you get there early, around five to ten minutes early. That way, you would not have to avoid the dash of people going in and out of the parking lot. When leaving the grounds, it also works the same way. Try to leave a couple of minutes late. Statistics have it that most accidents happen during this time when people are scrambling about just when classes are about to start or when classes are just over.

In areas where the parking lots are perpendicular spaces and not made for angle parking, it is advisable that you try to look for a space where you can pull straight out instead of backing out. You see, backing out in a crowded lot could get very tricky especially with many students in and about the parking lot.
If there are tips on how to drive safely inside a campus, there also are tips in doing maintenance. One of these is to purchase the right kind of parts for your vehicle. One trusted store when it comes to parts is Ford Parts Online. Its online collection of quality parts includes Ford Explorer parts among many others.

Rules Of Teen Driving
10.31.06 (7:45 pm)   [edit]
While states have their own individual rules that pertain to teen driving, parents should take more of an initiative to create their own rules for their children who are old enough to drive. It is really up to parents to enforce the rules and keep their children safe on the roads.

With teen drivers being more at a risk than any other drivers to be injured or killed in an automobile, it is urgent that parents create stricter rules on teen driving. Many parents are choosing to allow their children to drive with only one other passenger in the car. This cuts down on distractions, which are one main reason teens often wreck. In addition, some parents are not allowing any other teens in the car with their child.

Other parents are requiring their teen take driving courses before getting their license. If your teen is still not comfortable behind the wheel, they really should get more training. You should never allow your child to drive when it is icy or during a hard rain. You should teach them to pull over when they have poor visibility and always be sure they have a cell phone with them in case they need your assistance.

4 Tips for Buying Seized Vehicles at Police Auctions
10.31.06 (7:43 pm)   [edit]
Getting a good car for a good price is a hard thing to do today. Some would go to private auctions, private sellers or auto exchanges to try their luck, but nothing beats the sheer thrill of going to a police vehicle auction.

A police vehicle auction is a good venue to look for quality cars or not-so-pristine cars which can be restored and buy these cars at a reasonable price. Here are some tips on buying seized vehicles at police auctions:

(1) Take a good look at the cars

When auction day comes, one should make sure that he arrives early at the auction venue. This is to make sure that he has enough time to be able to look at the cars that are to be sold in the auction. This will also be a good time to look at the enthusiasm of people towards certain cars which will be indicative of their buying price for those cars.

(2) Always remember to bring cash and proper identification

Payments in auctions are usually made with cash and police auctions are no exemptions. Remember to bring a substantial amount of cash and always keep in mind that there might be additional costs for purchasing a car from a police auction aside from your bid. Also remember to bring your driver’s license just in case you win a certain bidding.

(3) Remember to pay up the registration fee and keep your number with you all the times.

When the formal auction begins, only those who were registered as official bidders are allowed to take bids. First timers can overlook this step and may become frustrated if they realize this a little bit to late.

(4) Read the auction rules

Getting familiarized with the auction rules is a practice of good bidders. It would be very frustrating to lose a bid just because of a certain technical violation regarding the rules. Always remember that there are different kinds of auctions and there are different rules in each kind.

Buying a car from the police auction is a great idea, if and only if the person who is buying really knows what he is doing. Knowing the right price, the condition of the car and the willingness of others to buy that car is very important indeed.

Fix It Yourself Automotive - Remember The Safety Rules
10.31.06 (7:41 pm)   [edit]
Fix It Yourself Automotive people are basically common sense people. They don’t mind the dirt and the grime that comes with fixing their own automobile.

As a matter of fact, they enjoy a sense of pride and accomplishment when they have fixed their vehicle and it’s purring down the highway with no problems.

They always take a common sense approach because you can get seriously hurt working on your vehicle, especially if you don’t obey the safety rules. These are some of the work-on-your-own-car safety rules.

• The exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide. A poisonous gas. Your working space must be well ventilated.

• Working on your car battery? It contains sulfuric acid. It burns and can explode. Please, no smoking around car batteries. Disconnect them also, you can get a nasty shock. Remove the ground cable to disconnect (-).

• Watch out for the hot parts. Know them well. Exhaust pipes, manifolds and mufflers will burn you badly.

• Absolutely no loose clothing around moving parts. Take your jewelry off. Do you have long hair? Tie it up. Do not work in sandals, they’re for the beach. Put your work boots on.

• Use proper equipment for hoisting and for holding up the car. Are you going under the car? Use the appropriate equipment to stabilize the car while in an upright position. The equipment must be able to support the weight of your car.

• Wipe up oil spills immediately. You’ll avoid slipping and hurting yourself later.

These are a few of the safety rules. There are so many more to observe. If you’re going to fix it yourself, let’s be sensible about it.

Acura RDX (2007)
10.28.06 (3:52 pm)   [edit]

Who needs "technocharging" when you've got a turbo?

Acura calls its all-new RDX the "SUV soul mate of the Acura TSX sedan". Given all the hype surrounding the burgeoning car-based "SUV" crossover vehicle segment, we're surprised that Acura is trying to tag the RDX as an SUV. As you can well guess, there's nothing SUV-like about the RDX. It's built like a car, is powered by a sedan-sourced four-cylinder engine and has just about 5 inches of ground clearance. So why is Acura calling the RDX a "SUV"?

We feel that the RDX could have a lot more "cred" if Acura would just go and call it a "crossover". But we don't care if the RDX isn't a real SUV. In fact, we like the RDX because it isn't a SUV. Essentially a tall wagon, the RDX rides and drives like a sports sedan -- which is exactly why we like it.

Note that we said we "like" the RDX -- not "love" the RDX. The vehicle's chassis and powertrain are great, but we think that its potential got diluted through Acura's attempt to brand it as a "SUV". Instead of giving enthusiasts a high-powered turbocharged all-wheel-drive sport wagon, Acura just had to try to make this vehicle "truck-like". We're not huge fans of the RDX's look: its lines are too chunky, its nose is too long and pointy and the back end just seems to end too abruptly. It may look well-proportioned in some of these photos, but the RDX's overall dimensions just seem a bit out of whack when seen in-person. Can you imagine just how sexy this vehicle would have been if Acura just made an estate (wagon) version of the TL or TSX?

That said, we can forgive the crossover's funky looks thanks to its excellent driving experience. In addition to being equipped with Honda's Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, the RDX boasts Honda's first-ever factory-turbocharged engine in the U.S. Like every Honda engine ever made, the unit found in the RDX is just stellar. This turbocharged 2.3-liter four-banger puts out a respectable 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, which does a decent enough job of getting this SUV-wannabe up to speed. We feel that the power and torque curves are matched nicely to this chassis, as we never once felt that the 2-ton RDX could use more power.

Of course, the coolest thing about the RDX's turbocharged engine is the sound. We often keep our test car's stereo system off just so we can listen to the (very) quiet whine of the turbocharger. It's very subtle and pleasing to the ear, which is fitting since the RDX is a near-luxury car. We may not get any cool psssht noises between shifts, but for this car, the soft whine of the turbo is cool enough.

As good as the RDX's engine is, the seats are even better. Yes, we are making special mention of the seats because they just rock so awesome. We don't know how Acura did it, but the RDX's seats are incredibly soft and supportive and they have great side bolsters. It really feels as if these seats were custom-made just for us. Thanks to these buckets, we never experience any sort of driver fatigue (usually brought on by poor driving position) and we are comfortably held in place as we toss the "SUV" from side to side. We almost hate to use this word, but the RDX's seats really are "perfect".

With the RDX being a luxury car and all, those seats come with all the bells and whistles like full-power adjustability, heated leather surfaces and more. But heated leather power seats are old news -- they've been around for decades. In the minds of many consumers, "luxury" equals "new" and "high-tech". Acura wanted to bring its RDX and the definition of luxury into the 21 century, so the car is just chock-full of technology. Of course, "technology" doesn't always equal "luxury", but Acura sure tried its hardest to make the RDX appealing to Silicon Valley types.

The analog gauges in the instrument binnacle look great, are brightly illuminated and they're very easy to read. The center console-mounted monitor used with the technology package, on the other hand, isn't. The 7-inch monitor is mounted high up on the center stack and is angled back towards the front of the car, meaning that the sun hits it just right at all times of day, meaning that natural sunlight totally washes out the screen. When we can't see the screen, we can't see our map, our audio controls, Zagat restaurant ratings and more. Furthermore, this technology package is controlled by a joystick/wheel combo, which isn't that intuitive to use -- and downright difficult to use while driving. Acura should get rid of the iDrive-wannabe interface and give the system a touch screen user interface. Hey, if the Civic can get a touch screen command center, the high-end Acura can do so, too.

Overall, the RDX is great... as a near-luxury sports wagon. The RDX offers a package that is sure to please those that need all-wheel drive capability and moderate amounts of cargo room in a fun-to-drive vehicle. People looking for a real SUV will definitely be disappointed with the RDX, but those that want a sports wagon with a good view of the road are sure to be pleased.

Ford Needs to Fix SUVs First
10.27.06 (4:21 pm)   [edit]
Ford, fresh off its biggest quarterly loss in 14 years, will turn to sourcing parts from China and (finally!) producing more fuel-efficient vehicles to lead the company out of its slump. Ford_logo

Ford vice president overseeing environmental and safety engineering Susan Cischke was quoted by the AP (via BusinessWeek) as saying that hybrids and fuel cell vehicles are crucial to the company (aka "my job is safe). It is surprising that she didn't mention flex fuel vehicles since ethanol has been a big part of the "Bold Moves" campaign.

Ford could start its recovery by putting the Expedition or Explorer guzzling SUVs out to pasture, and by developing more fuel efficient full-size SUVs.

Surprisingly, unlike GM, DaimlerChrysler and Nissan, Ford has no flex-fuel SUVs in its 2007 lineup! Since SUVs gobble up much more fuel than most cars, moving to diesel, ethanol, or hybrid SUVs would be the fastest pathway to cutting back on our "oil addiction."

Ford also said it will buy 63 percent more parts from China this year (so much for buying American).

Cocaine Energy Drink Like Red Bull or Rockstar Energy Drinks x10!!
10.21.06 (9:08 am)   [edit]

cocaine energy drink

Cocaine Energy Drink is the hottest new product to hit the market. It’s creating HUGE buzz in the news and is extremely controversial. Some people don’t like the name, while others think the Cocaine Energy Drink comes too close to the feeling of being on cocaine. The drink has over 3 times the caffeine that any energy drink on the market currently contains., and a slight throat numbing effect. This Cocaine Energy drink is sold out every where and extremely difficult to find. While some legislators and activists are trying to stop the Cocaine Drink from hitting store shelves others are scrambling to find it and try it. Some people describe it as a Fruity atomic fireball others like, some don’t. But with such a huge amount of caffeine the energy rush is definitely something to be careful with!

2006 Volkswagen Jetta Review
10.17.06 (5:03 pm)   [edit]

The 2006 Volkswagen Jetta offers a near ideal balance between ride and handling. This, along with its premium cabin materials and long features list, makes it one of our top recommendations to small-car buyers.

Pros
Powerful turbo engine, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, comfortable ride, GLI model's tight handling, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, excellent crash test scores, solid build quality.

Cons
Elevated price, bland exterior styling contradicts nameplate's youthful image.

What's New for 2006
Two new trim levels join the Jetta lineup for 2006: the upscale 2.0T and the sporty GLI. Both feature a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and both can be equipped with VW's trick DSG direct shift gearbox. All Jettas besides the Value Edition now feature standard alloy wheels, and torso-protecting rear-seat side airbags are newly optional.

Introduction:
The Volkswagen Jetta has always been one of our favorites. Like many cars conceived in Germany, the Jetta possesses an uncanny ability to keep the driver in touch with every undulation and irregularity on the road without sacrificing comfort. VW's small car can no longer be grouped with economy cars like the Civic and Corolla in terms of price, but it hasn't lost any of its appeal with U.S. buyers, thanks to a long list of standard features at every trim level, as well as stylish, comfortable cabins replete with high-quality materials and the signature VW blue and red nighttime illumination.

Volkswagen has kept its top seller fresh with continual upgrades: the introduction of the marvelous 1.8T engine for 2000; the arrival of a wagon version and a sport suspension option for 2001; and the return of the GLI sedan for enthusiast-type drivers in 2002. For 2004, a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI power plant debuted. The TDI promises to offer all the economic pluses of a diesel along with comparable power and refinement to VW's gasoline engines. An all-new VW Jetta arrived midyear in 2005, and although it's a better car in every way, it lacks the cool factor of the previous-generation Jetta. Regardless, the new Jetta is a leap forward in refinement, handling, power and value. The addition of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four for 2006 means even greater levels of performance, and the return of the GLI model brings a little excitement back to the Jetta lineup. If you're looking for a car that's small but not too small, not to mention safe, refined and well equipped, the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta deserves consideration.
For Pricing information, see our Pricing page.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options:
The Volkswagen Jetta sedan is available in Value Edition, 2.5, TDI, 2.0T and GLI trim levels. The Value Edition sedan comes with 15-inch wheels, air conditioning, a 10-speaker CD stereo with MP3 compatibility, cruise control and power windows, mirrors and locks. The 2.5 adds upgraded interior trim and alloy wheels. The TDI is equipped much like the 2.5, while the 2.0T adds a 16-inch wheels, a sunroof, 115-volt power outlet and heated seats. The sporty GLI boasts 17-inch wheels, a firmer suspension, bi-xenon headlamps, color-keyed body cladding and sport bucket seats. Options include a navigation system, leather upholstery, power seats, automatic climate control, a six-disc CD changer and, on the GLI only, 18-inch wheels.
For more Style information, see our Compare Styles page.

Powertrains and Performance:
Value Edition and 2.5 models come with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder with 150 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The TDI has a 1.9-liter diesel four that makes 100 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque while getting up to 42 mpg. The 2.0T and GLI feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 200 hp. A five-speed manual is standard on the Value Edition, 2.5 and TDI, while the 2.0T and GLI feature a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic is available on all models. The automatic in the TDI, 2.0T and GLI is VW's DSG direct shift gearbox. A manual transmission by definition, the DSG removes the clutch pedal, and places it under the control of computer chips and hydraulic servos. When left in auto mode, it's as smooth and hassle-free as any conventional automatic. When shifted manually, the DSG offers quick, precise gear changes.
For more Performance data, see our Specifications page.

Safety:
Four-wheel antilock disc brakes, seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants and full-length head curtain airbags are standard across the line. Stability control is either standard or optional, depending on the model. Seat-mounted side airbags for rear passengers are optional. In NHTSA crash testing, the VW Jetta received four stars for driver and passenger protection in frontal impacts, and five stars for front and rear seat protection in side impacts. The IIHS rated the VW Jetta "Good" (its highest rating) after conducting its offset frontal-impact crash test. The sedan also aced the side-impact test conducted by the IIHS.
For more Safety information, see our Safety page.

Interior Design and Special Features:
The Jetta's cabin is filled with high-quality materials and assembled with care. Even the base Value Edition model has an upscale flair with comfortable seating and tasteful trim. A tall roofline gives the front seat a spacious feel. Headroom is a little tight in the rear, but there's ample legroom for adults. Trunk capacity measures 16 cubic feet.
For more Interior Features information, see our Specifications page.

Driving Impressions:
Out on the road, the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta manages to provide both comfortable ride quality and agile handling. Though not as edgy as the previous Jetta, the current model has a rock-solid feel with a surprisingly quiet ride. Acceleration is acceptable with all of the engines, but our favorite is the smooth and potent turbo four. This engine is most enjoyable in the GLI sedan, which has a taut suspension to back it up.

2005 Honda FCX Review
10.14.06 (3:34 pm)   [edit]

Cruisin' the hydrogen highway

Even as Honda plows forward with plans to be the first to introduce a fuel-cell production car, I found myself strangely uninterested in this alternative-energy vehicle. It seemed like an outdated look into the future, like finding a back issue of Popular Mechanics that said flying cars would be the next big thing.

Then one Sunday, the odd-looking, zero-emissions 2005 Honda FCX was delivered to my house. It sat there while I wrestled with how to fill it up with hydrogen on the weekend. I began to view it as a giant pain, an albatross that would never be more than a footnote in the history of transportation.

But then I drove it.

Sponsored Links: Project4Hire.com is the place to find Freelance Programmers, Web Designers, Graphic Artists, IT Professionals, Translators, Writers, Consultants & other Freelance Professionals. If you have a project you need help on, you’ve come to the right place. Find qualified freelancers willing to do the job within your budget! Post your project for free and receive bids.

After about 20 seconds of beeps, whirs and strange groans, the display panel flashed "Ready to Drive." I slid it into gear and pulled onto the hydrogen highway. Within a mile, I knew what I would say in my review: Make the cost of this car competitive, make hydrogen stations readily available, and I'd be content to drive one of these babies from here on out.

But huge questions loom: Can you manufacture hydrogen inexpensively? Can you ship and store it safely? Answers to those questions are being hotly investigated by many more qualified minds than mine. And they are questions that will need to be answered before Honda's production vehicle, to be released in two years, can be more than just a pilot program. All I can tell you about is how it feels to drive this car. Cut back to me driving the FCX and push in for a tight shot revealing a smile on my face.

Are fuel cells coming of age?
The first usable fuel-cell cars began to appear on the roads in 2002, but they were limited in range and wildly expensive. The 2003 Honda FCX was the first hydrogen-powered fuel-cell car to be certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the U.S. EPA in July 2002. The 2005 FCX received a Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) rating by CARB and an EPA Tier-2 Bin 1 rating, the lowest possible national emissions rating.

The 2005 FCX — which uses the same body as the Honda EV+ electric car — contains the first Honda-produced fuel-cell stack. It's quicker, has a longer range and gets better fuel-efficiency than earlier prototypes that lacked this power plant. Honda said the two primary goals achieved by the technology in this car were "to increase the fuel cell's environmental adaptability to a wide range of climates, and to make mass production more viable."

This second-generation FCX is a prototype worth more than a million dollars. It is capable of starting at temperatures as low as minus-4-degrees Fahrenheit and has a range of about 190 miles on a tank of hydrogen. The Honda Fuel Cell Stack PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) delivers 107 horsepower via an electric motor. Additionally, it uses a regenerative braking system similar to what is used in hybrid cars, which converts the kinetic energy produced by the brakes into electrical energy and stores it in an ultra capacitor (no, not the "flux capacitor," from Back to the Future) which functions a bit like a battery. As a result, fuel economy is equivalent to a car getting an EPA city/highway rating of 62/51 miles per gallon of gas (57 mpg combined).

Fuel cell — a simple concept
The theory behind fuel-cell cars is simple enough. Hydrogen, which is stored under pressure in a tank, is mixed with oxygen from the air to produce an electrochemical reaction. It's a bit like having a battery that never goes dead as long as you keep adding hydrogen. Once the electrical power is generated, it can be used to turn a motor that propels the car. Power delivery is augmented by regenerative braking. In essence, driving a fuel-cell car is very similar to driving an electric car — except a fuel-cell car has a tailpipe from which water vapor is the only emission.

While development of the fuel-cell stack seems to have taken a big step forward, the infrastructure supporting the car is lagging severely behind. When we needed a refill for our test car, we had to take the FCX back to Honda's Torrance headquarters. The next time we were nearing empty, Honda arranged a fill-up only three blocks away from Edmunds.com's offices at the City of Santa Monica department of public works. While 25 hydrogen stations are listed as being within 100 miles of Los Angeles, only one is open to the public. The others are either still in the planning phase or are for private vehicle fleets.

Fill 'er up (with hydrogen)
The refueling process was similar to that used to refill compressed natural gas vehicles (CNG) except that, due to the extreme volatility of hydrogen, a ground connector is attached. The ground connection also reads information about the car's operation, including the temperature of the tank, so the maximum amount of hydrogen can be pumped into it.

The Department of Energy sets a benchmark price for hydrogen at $5 per kilogram (a kilogram is roughly equivalent to a gallon of gasoline). However, depending on how hydrogen is manufactured — often it is made as a byproduct of natural gas refinement — the price could vary significantly. Currently, there are stations selling hydrogen for as little as $3.60 a kilogram. Given that the fuel economy of the FCX is nearly twice that of a typical gas car, this makes the price per mile driven more economical.

Honda is planning a Home Energy Station (HES), an integrated module that runs off a household's natural-gas supply to generate hydrogen vehicle fuel. The HES could also provide heat and electricity back to the house.

Unique driving experience
Step on the accelerator of the FCX and you get instantaneous power. There is none of the wind-up, no climbing a torque curve as in a gasoline-powered car. All the power is right there, whenever you want it (and can find hydrogen). Since it uses an electric motor, there is no need for a transmission. It's like being directly connected to a silent but powerful source of energy. It feels effortless: a pleasant feeling of freedom. Furthermore, since you know you are only leaving behind a trail of water vapor, you feel downright virtuous.

Because our test track is over 150 miles from home, however, we had to tow the Honda to the facility. Once there the front-drive FCX delivered a rather pokey 13 seconds from zero to 60 mph. Despite that ultimately slow acceleration number, the FCX delivered a strong 0-30-mph time (3.7 seconds) and had plenty of acceleration for brisk around-town driving. On the highway, it easily cruised at 70 mph and offers a top speed of 93 mph.

Our test driver found the two-door car's handling to be poor, reaching a slalom speed of only 60.4 mph. This could be because of the added weight of the fuel-cell powertrain, which pushes it up to a hefty 3713 pounds. The brake pedal provided plenty of reliable feedback, and stopping distances were average at 135 feet from 60 to 0 mph.

A very enjoyable car
The EV+ body that is now used by the FCX looks a little odd, but the interior configuration provides a desirable, tall driving position. This requires a significant step up to get inside. If you think to examine the car's configuration, it's apparent there is at least 1 foot of storage space between the bottom of the car and the interior floorboards, space that is used to store the electronics. Creating a vehicle with these dimensions could pose a problem to future production fuel-cell cars.

One nice touch is the unusually good legroom and visibility for rear-seat passengers. The seats throughout are very comfortable, and all interior features are of the usual high quality expected of Honda. It was a smart move to make this cutting-edge car so ordinary and pleasing in every other way.

Our test vehicle had a navigation system, a very useful feature when searching for out-of-the-way hydrogen fuel stations. The nav screen moves up to reveal a CD player beneath and a slot for memory cards. All the climate controls are simple and straightforward. We particularly enjoyed the attractive and cool blue gauges that flicker constantly to show the inner workings of the fuel-cell system. Our eyes were often drawn to the "miles to empty" gauge, which seem oddly low-tech given its extremely important role.

But what of safety?
Many people who rode in the fuel-cell car were concerned about the rear-positioned hydrogen tank, perhaps because of the horrific images of the Hindenburg explosion in 1937. However, Honda said the fuel tank in the FCX has been extensively tested — once it was crash tested in a collision with a train — and it never ruptured. Furthermore, hydrogen is extremely light and, if a leak occurred, the vapor would rapidly rise and quickly dissipate. This is actually safer than a normal car which, if it leaked would leave pools of flammable gasoline under it.

Where does this road lead?
Honda admitted that the future of fuel-cell cars is uncertain and there is no guarantee that this type of car will ever make a practical contribution to meeting our transportation needs. The platinum fuel-cell stack is expensive and very labor-intensive to assemble. Notwithstanding, Honda has set an admirable example by putting 15 FCXs on the road, mainly with public agencies in California, and has another five cars that are used for Honda's internal fleet.

Honda is also pressing forward with plans to introduce a production fuel-cell vehicle slated to go on sale in two years. The cost of this production vehicle, currently named the FCX Concept, has not yet been set or even estimated. And clearly, to make it practical would require the completion of California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Hydrogen Highway. This, and many other things about hydrogen fuel-cell cars, are still very much in the planning — and dreaming — phase.

How to buy your next car: 101
10.11.06 (8:19 pm)   [edit]

What’s the biggest mistake you can make when buying a new car?

Showing the salesperson how much you love it, according to Steve Hague, owner of Cranston-based Professional Auto Buying Services which helps clients buy or lease new cars.

“When you go on the car lot and see the car that you love, that you’ve wanted for a while, don’t say: ‘I love it! I think it’s great!’ ” he said. “No, no, no!”

The problem with showing your emotions, he said, is that you may find yourself agreeing to a price that is more than you really should pay, as in: “I have to spend more money, but I guess it’s worth it.”

Instead, decide on the car you want and then establish a price you are willing to pay before you start negotiations.

“And don’t be a payment buyer,” Hague advised, meaning someone who comes into a showroom and immediately announces what he or she can afford. Instead, let the salesperson initiate any talk about money.

Take the car for a drive and make sure the windows are rolled up and the radio is off,” he said, as you want to hear the wind noise and any rattles. And be wary of the sales person “shooting the breeze, pointing things out, asking you questions.”

“It may be just shooting the breeze, but he’s building a profile of you,” he said. “A car does not have a price. A dealer is looking for a comfortable monthly payment and he’s going to put you in that car for that money.”

Peter Perroni, 37, general manager of sales at Scott Volkswagen on Newport Avenue in East Providence, agreed that selling cars is a business.

But he said Scott Volkswagen had been in business for 50 years because its focus was on selling a number of cars to the same customer, or the same family, over many years.

“No customer is one sale,” he said. “We’ve got to do a good job selling that first car. Don’t base everything on one sale and the business will grow.”

General Manager C. Bradford “Brad” Scott, 28, the third generation of the Scott family to be involved in the business, agreed, noting that “most of our business comes from previous customers.”

“It’s pretty simple, I think,” he said. “Do the right thing and have the best interest of the customer in mind.”

“Every buyer is a little different,” Perroni added. “A 28-year-old single guy is not going to be as interested in side airbags as a mother of three. The best way to buy a car is from a salesman you are comfortable with.”

Hague, 42, who also works as a purchasing manager for Rye, N.Y.-based manufacturer Handy & Harman, said he has always had an interest in negotiating. He has a graduate degree in industrial management from Rhode Island College’s School of Management and Technology and teaches a three-hour course on “How to Buy or Lease a New Car” at the Learning Center.

Under the aegis of his auto-buying company, he will also negotiate the purchase or lease of a new car for clients for a fee of around $250. “You either love negotiating or you hate it,” he said. “I love it and it saves my clients (who hate it) aggravation, time and, in some cases, money.”

He said he got interested in negotiating the purchase of new cars after he bought his first car. “I was 23 years old and just out of school and thought I knew everything,” he said. “But I made mistakes.”

“I financed the deal through the dealership, which is not always a good idea, as the dealership is taking a percentage,” he said, adding that he also agreed to some “extras” he later regretted.

He cited some extras to be wary of, including window etching, or making the car easier to find if stolen by having all the windows etched with an identification number; fabric protection, which “is pretty much the same thing as going to the store for a $5 can of ScotchGuard;” and security systems, which you can get installed as such places as Best Buy for half the price.

In addition, he mentioned fees for such services as extended warranties for the drive train (“the base warranty is sufficient”) and dealer prep. He said that he once came across a one called the ADM, or Additional Dealer Markup, fee. “I swear to you,” he said laughing.

Perroni agreed there were some dodgy sales people in the business,

“There are a lot of bad sales people,” he said, adding that most of the salespeople at Scott Volkswagen had been with the company for more than 10 years.

Hague said a dodgy sales person might try to work higher numbers, and even go off to “consult” with the general manager. Indeed, the general manager may make an appearance in a “good cop, bad cop” scenario, he said. “(The general manager) may be gruff and say: ‘There’s no way I can make that work.’ Appearing in this way makes him appear as a higher authority, and you might find yourself going along because, ‘Gee, he’s the general manager, it must be true,’ ” he said.

But be firm, said Hague. “Say: ‘This is the car I want, this is the price I’m going to pay.’ Say it with confidence.”

“Remember, the most powerful thing you can do is get up and walk away,” he added. “Nine times out of ten, dealers will not let you. They don’t want you going down the street (and buying a car from someone else).”

In general, Hague advised would-be buyers to do their homework, making sure their credit history has no surprises and researching the real price of the car and thus what is a reasonable markup for the dealer. He said the sticker price, or manufacturer’s suggested retail price, may be a few thousand dollars more than the cost to the dealer.

“Have a good idea what the cost to the dealer is,” he said, adding that Edmunds.com was a good start. “Ask the dealer to send you the invoice on the car. (He or she) may be reluctant, but it will give you the cost.”

Regarding leasing, Hague said it was good for “people who do not drive a lot and like to have a new car every three or four years,” but warned that you would have to abide by the restrictions to avoid heavy penalties. “If you’re planning to keep a car, it’s not the way to go,” he said.

And as for buying a used car, Hague said that while you can find out values from such sources as Kelly’s Blue Book, the best thing to do is to take it to your local mechanic. He said the dealer should be able to put temporary plates on the car so you can drive it for a couple of days.

Perroni said many of the used cars at Scott Volkswagen had been serviced by the dealership itself. “We don’t sell a car without a history,” he said. “We don’t buy cars at auction.”

Such openness extends to Perroni’s office, which has no walls and sits beside the front door to the showroom. “I sit at the front because I want to meet all the customers,” he said.

“And Brad has no door on his office,” he added.

Future Vehicle: 10 New Porsche Models by 2010
10.10.06 (2:00 pm)   [edit]

There've been times when Porsche was nothing more than the 911 company. No longer. Sources inside Weissach confirm Porsche is working on up to 10 new models for launch by the end of the decade. Some are variants of the existing 997-series 911. But others will take the company into new and possibly controversial market niches.

Sponsored Links: Project4Hire.com is the place to find Freelance Programmers, Web Designers, Graphic Artists, IT Professionals, Translators, Writers, Consultants & other Freelance Professionals. 911 Turbo Cabriolet: Seen here with very little disguise--just some tape on the front air dam and silver around the headlamps--this is the convertible version of the just-launched Turbo. The current 3.6-liter flat-six turbo coupe is rated 473 horses and 457 pound-feet and is good for a mid-three-second 0-to-60-mph time. The slightly heavier ragtop should take a few tenths longer to get to 60, but should exceed the 996 Turbo Cabrio's 191-mph top speed, a number now rivaled by the bigger Bentley Continental GTC.

911 Targa: Porsche long ago gave up on cutting the 911's roof from A- to B-pillar to create the Targa. Like the 996 version, the 997 will have a large glass panel that retains the car's roof rails between the pillars for better structural rigidity .

911 GT3 RS: This is the limited-edition homologation of the 2007 GT3 RSR race car, built to meet FIA GT rules. Rumors are the race car and the RS will get the 3.8-liter flat-six, instead of the 3.6-liter engine. The RS is a lightweight car with the Carrera 4's wide rear fenders, a wider rear track, more aggressive wing, and modified front spoiler lip. Weight savings include a carbon-fiber wingtop, lots of composite bodywork, and lightweight glass.

911 GT2: The mother of all 911s arrives just in time to put ol' 997 over the top. The 996 version of the GT2 got an 11-percent-horsepower boost over quotidian 911 Turbos via modified turbos and intercooler for more boost. Add 11 percent to the 997 Turbo's 473 horsepower, and you get a Z06-topping 525 horses. Note the rear-fender intercooler inlets. With no sunroof and other weight savings, the new Turbo's 0-to-60-mph time will seem like a walk in the park when this limited-edition car arrives.

Panamera: It looks like a Cayenne, but it's a mule for the four-seat, four-door Panamera, as both cars share the front-mounted 4.5-liter V-8, rated 340 horsepower naturally aspirated and 520 horses in the Cayenne's new twin-turbo S form. The Panamera also is tipped to share a version of the Cayenne's all-wheel-drive system and its proposed hybrid powertrain. The Panamera will be assembled in Leipzig where the Cayenne is built, and production of the Carrera GT is just ending. The Panamera is expected in 2009 as a 2010 model.

What else is coming?
Cayman RS: This lightweight version of the Cayman is due soon. Porsche has no plans to offer more power, as it wants to ensure the 911 remains the company's icon car.

Next-generation 911: Development of the all-new 998 version of the 911 is underway. A key issue with the next 911 is the iconic flat-six engine apparently can't be stretched beyond 4.0 liters, which limits the potential output, even with technologies such as direct injection. This means the car will almost certainly feature extensive use of aluminum and fast-shifting DSG transmissions to save weight and boost performance.

Small SUV: Porsche is working on a small SUV to fit below the Cayenne. Many have assumed that, just as the Cayenne came off a platform shared with VW's Touareg, this'll be a variant of the new small SUV under development as the Audi Q5. But Porsche sources have confirmed the company is pondering a radical, sporty three-door vehicle with strong 911 design cues. Porsche has successfully run all-wheel-drive 911s and 959s in the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally in the past.

New 928: With the front-engine Panamera now underway, Porsche engineers also are pondering whether a short-wheelbase, two-door version of the car could be built as a 21st-century 928 to take on cars such as Bentley's Continental GT and Ferrari's 612 Scaglietti.

New Carrera GT: Production of the Carrera GT has finished, with about 1200 cars built. Insiders admit they'd like to build a successor to the mid-engine V-10-powered roadster, but that any work on such a car would be unlikely before the end of the decade.

Hardwood Laminate Prefinished Engineered Flooring

Hardwood Flooring Wood Floors Laminate Flooring Engineered Prefinished Discount

The sunny, care-free days of summer have drifted away and now it is time to get ready for the colorful falling leaves and crisp, cool, windy nights that follow the autumn season. With the season transition and the holidays soon approaching, it is a great time to bring nature’s warm colors, tones and hues from the outside into your home, floor decorating experts say.

Hardwoodbrokers.com, a leading manufacturer of high-end, hardwood flooring, announces its Exotic Series of hardwood flooring. This new line brings striking species of hardwood from areas of South America and Africa, including Brazilian Cherry/Jatoba, Santos/Cabreuva, Sapele and Tigerwood. These four species of wood are rich in tone and provide a warmer, cozier ambiance to any setting.

The beauty of laminate flooring, however, is more than just skin deep. It is made from wood products and plastics that are compressed and bonded under high pressure to form an incredibly hard plank with an aluminum-oxide finish that is almost “as hard as diamonds”. “It is nearly impossible to stain, it doesn’t fade, never needs waxing or polishing and will probably never wear through,” says Marc Henderson, CEO of Hardwoodbrokers.com.

Raise your home value simply by investing in flooring
10.08.06 (6:40 am)   [edit]

Want to significantly increase your home's asking price? Invest in new flooring!

Investing $4000 - $5000 in new flooring can increase the value of your home by an average of $10,000, doubling the home owner's return on investment, reports John Shipman in his Time Magazine article "10 Ways to Raise the Value of your Home". This is a good tip for those planning to put their homes on the market.

According to experts, the key to attracting buyers and getting the most value from your home sale is to follow the theory of "What buyers can see vs. what they can't see." In other words, home sellers should make improvements starting from what buyers can see right away (such as flooring, landscaping, new paint) to what buyers can't see (plumbing, electrical upgrades). That is, before investing in a new plumbing system for the house, change the floors. Most buyers won't even ask how good the plumbing is if they notice a huge stain on the carpeting first. That first impression, the exterior, is what gets buyers into the door and interested.

FloorMall.com, your one stop flooring shop company knows the difference a strong attractive floor can make to a resale value. With multiple flooring centers throughout America, the company employees top flooring consultants to help home owners choose the best flooring option for their lifestyle and investment goals.

The most popular flooring people use to create an air of elegance is hardwood flooring. Installed and treated properly, hardwood floors give the home an image of refined age and history. Laminate flooring, area rugs, tile and bamboo floors are also in demand because it gives the home a crisp, clean, and modern look.

Over the past three years, the real estate market has experienced tremendous growth giving buyers many options to choose from. It is therefore necessary for sellers who want to attract potential buyers and make a profitable sale, to improve the homes they are selling. Updating the flooring in your home is a simple and effective way of accomplishing that big sale.

A Lot More Firepower for BMW’s 6-Shooter
10.05.06 (11:46 am)   [edit]

IT has been nearly 30 years since two debuts, of an engine and a car, ushered in the modern era of BMW. At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, the company displayed a new version of its highly respected in-line 6-cylinder engine. That was also the year when BMW began importing its 3 Series coupe to America.

At that point, the first 3 Series car, the 320, had been on sale in Europe for nearly two years; it was a handsome replacement for the boxy 2002, the original Ultimate Driving Machine. But while the 320 had a come-hither price of less than $9,000 — almost unimaginable in today’s world of six-figure performance cars — it had come only a 4-cylinder engine.

Sponsored Links: Project4Hire.com is the place to find Freelance Programmers, Web Designers, Graphic Artists, IT Professionals, Translators, Writers, Consultants & other Freelance Professionals. The new 6 changed that, though only for Europeans. It would be seven more years before BMW would entrust Americans with the smooth-running, more powerful engine.

The 320 became a legendary success, igniting sales and helping to transform the Bavarian automaker from a niche brand to a respected mass-market player. But in 1984, BMW replaced the beloved 320 with two new derivatives: the 318i, perhaps the crummiest Bimmer ever, a gutless wunderkind that cost twice as much as the 320, and an even pricier 6-cylinder upgrade.

Buyers proved willing to pay dearly for straight 6’s, and over the next 20 years they did so in ever higher numbers. In the same period, the basic engine architecture and output changed relatively little.

For 2007, BMW has brought out new fifth-generation coupes, the BMW 328i and 335i, cheering enthusiasts who haven’t seen a new two-door 3 Series since 1999. Both cars have new 3-liter in-line engines, which BMW insists are its most sophisticated 6’s yet.

But as BMW celebrates the pearl anniversary of its 6-cylinder 3 Series (in case you’re thinking of sending a gift), I find myself wondering, “How much longer can this go on?” The in-line 6 has, arguably, come to define this car. But insomuch as horsepower expectations escalate from year to year, where else can BMW go with its 6-shooter? From a development standpoint, will they still be viable power plants seven or eight years from now, when the sixth-generation 3 Series arrives?

Never suggest to anyone at BMW that a V-6, now the power plant of choice for most competitors, might be a better alternative; that’s as heretical as suggesting that sauerkraut is too sour, that wiener schnitzel ought to include wieners or that iDrive controls were a blunder.

BMW doesn’t easily change course. The basic layout of six cylinders in a row produces a velvet-smooth, almost vibration-free supply of power. But V-6’s, while less smooth, have often been coaxed into generating more horsepower and torque — outrageous amounts, in fact, if they are turbocharged to force in more air for combustion.

To get more power from in-line 6’s, BMW has made them rev ever higher, and increased their displacement. As size grows, however, fuel efficiency declines.

For its 2007 models, and to one-up its competitors in the horsepower wars, BMW had to adjust its conservative corporate mindset and reconsider its decades-old stance against turbocharging. BMW always believed the tradeoff for turbocharging would be searing-hot operating temperatures, poorer fuel economy and unacceptable throttle lag while the turbos spooled up.

But technology advances have changed the game. The latest turbochargers can work more precisely with direct fuel injection, yielding a broader power band and unexpectedly better mileage.

The new 335i’s 3-liter engine has twin Mitsubishi turbochargers and is rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The outgoing M3 supercar, with its larger 3.2-liter, 333-horsepower 6, can barely outrun it. Car and Driver magazine reports that the 335i’s 0-to-60 m.p.h. time of 4.9 seconds is just 0.1 second slower than the current M3, which costs at least $7,000 more.

The 335i, however, consumes far less fuel than the M3; the new coupe carries a rating of 20 miles a gallon in town, 29 on the highway, compared with the M3’s 16/23.

The only lag I felt was around 1,500 r.p.m., when I tried to leave cellphone yakkers and other slowpokes behind. The six-speed manual transmission seemed to have more gears than it needed; usually, when I wanted to do something in a hurry, I wasn’t anywhere near the right gear. I actually preferred the automatic, which can pick the proper gear faster than mortal man.

I also preferred driving the nonturbocharged 3-liter engine in the 328i, which delivers better economy (21/29 m.p.g.) and is faultlessly direct in its throttle response. The 328i’s 230-horse engine has 46 more horses than the 2.5-liter engine it replaces.

For now at least, the 3 Series sedans — new for the 2006 model year — retain different engines from the coupes, though the 335i’s turbo 6 may become an option on the sedan next year. A convertible model (with a retracting hardtop) will be introduced in January at the Detroit auto show; BMW convertibles usually share their engines with the coupes. The rollout will continue next year with a new M3 coupe.

Externally, the coupes share family resemblances with the sedans, of course, though BMW says it made a serious effort to differentiate them. Put coupe and sedan photos side by side and try to spot the differences; no points are given for noting that the coupe has two fewer doors.

The coupe is roughly two inches longer and sits nearly two inches lower than the sedan, although each rides on the same chassis. Handling characteristics feel similar. An optional sport package for the 335i nicely fills the fender wells with 18-inch Bridgestone Potenza tires on alloy wheels. Even with the firm sport suspension and the run-flat Bridgestones, the 335i’s ride remains compliant enough to avoid the M3’s denture-rattling harshness. Large brakes (13.7 inches in front, 13.2 inches in the rear) are good for 160-foot stops from 70 miles an hour.

To compensate for the heavier twin-turbo, the 335i went on a diet, with slimmed down body panels and plastic front fenders.

Fortunately, the driving experience loses nothing in this painstaking redesign; handling is still crisp, precise and rewarding. Above 75 m.p.h., the optional active-steering system provides better on-center feel — a worthwhile feature in West Texas, where the limit was recently raised to 80 m.p.h.

The driving position is well suited to high-performance driving, but the seats were as hard as Adirondack chairs. I much prefer the cushy seats in the BMW 5 Series.

As usual, the indecipherable instrument panel is a black forest of buttons, and the annoying iDrive controller has migrated like a virus to this platform. (Fortunately, iDrive comes only with the optional navigation system.) So layer upon layer of redundant switches, dials and toggles have been added to compensate for the system’s shortcomings. (Wasn’t eliminating switches the reason iDrive was developed?)

During this test, I did peruse the 244-page owner’s manual to unlock some of iDrive’s mysteries. It does have some useful features, if you can twist, click and beat on it accurately enough to navigate its labyrinth of menus — while driving 80 m.p.h. (recommended in West Texas only) and balancing a scalding-hot latte.

That brings me to the twin-turbo cup holders. These engineering marvels boing out of the dashboard on either side of the glove box — often when you don’t want them to.

They will hold the aforementioned latte, though not a 44-ounce Super Big Gulp. (Hello again, West Texas!) While deployed, the cup holders will also remove the kneecaps of inattentive front-seat passengers as they enter or exit the vehicle.

There is little need to discuss rear passengers, because there are unlikely to be many. Any adult consenting to climb back there risks being speared by the odd seat belt presenter arms that stick out to make the front belts easier to find. Only two legroom-challenged rear seating positions exist.

These are mere nitpicks, if you will, about what is still the world’s quintessential sport coupe. Inarguably, it’s the best 3 Series coupe yet. What is arguable is whether you will be happy with the ever-escalating price. BMW says the new coupes cost less than the cars they replace, when comparably equipped. Technically that’s true if you count new and possibly unwanted features like the power moon roof, but the bottom line is that the price of admission has ballooned to $35,995 for the 328i and $41,295 for the 335i. A loaded 335i can easily top $52,000.

If that price doesn’t scare you, you may want to wait for the new M3 due next year, which will reportedly make 400 horsepower. But, get this: the latest version of that car, hitherto the ultimate 6-cylinder driving machine, will be powered by, yes, a V-8.

INSIDE TRACK: An unbearable lightness of quintessence.

Use of police car in campaign ad questioned
10.02.06 (6:35 am)   [edit]
PHOENIX Use of a Gilbert police car in a campaign commercial for Republican candidate for attorney general Bill Montgomery is being questioned.
Mayor Steve Berman arranged for use of the car in the ad shoot last month at a park next to the town's vehicle maintenance yard.

State law prohibits a city or town from using personnel, equipment or other resources for the purpose of influencing the outcomes of elections.

Berman says he consulted with town employees who he says believed it was permissable to use the car in the commercial if the town's insignia was not shown.

However, Town Manager George Pettit says the car should not have been used, but there won't be any consequences. Pettit calls the incident (quote) "definitely a lesson learned."

Berman, who is a Republican, also says that Democratic Attorney General is free to use Gilbert equipment as long as the insignia is not shown.

Do you know there's so many types of furniture?

pine furniture oak bedroom furniture oak coffee tables

This is a great years for me. After all this years of hardworking now I am able to own my own house. I’ve been working hard all this time just to get my dream house. Me and my wife has never been happier since our baby girl came to our life. At first I thought getting the house is the hardest part, yet now I have to faced a new problems already. Its how should I get the perfect furniture for my house?

We all knew that in this matter, woman always want to be in charge for it. They will be the judged in what to buy and where to put it. It’s funny when my wife and my daughter always argue about where to place the furniture. As for me, sigh! to them I am merely the source of money to buy those things. My wife specifically told me she want a pine furniture for the dining room. I have no idea that it's hard to buy furniture for the house, they seem to know all details about it. Even she told me she want an oak furniture for our bedroom. And here I was thinking that there’s only one types of furniture and that is.....…furniture.

Things are different with my daughter. She want her bedroom furniture to be pink in color. I might as well get her rooms decorate in a powerpuff girls theme. That might be fun right?

This week will be a very tiring and busy for me. With all the shopping, let us put aside all the precious time that will be wasted on window shopping. I miss my bed already.
