HAS it really been eight years since Ford Malaysia sprung the Ranger on an unsuspecting public? The year was 1999, the East Asian economic flu was still lingering, and hire purchase interest rates were over 9% per annum. The first-generation Ranger made Malaysians look at motoring in a whole new light. Before it came along, one-tonne pick-ups were mere workhorses, used only for hauling heavy loads and labourers in timber camps, plantations and construction sites.
The Ranger changed all that almost overnight and it suddenly became cool for anyone and everyone to own and drive a truck, especially if it’s painted bright yellow.
Of course, it was only a matter of time before other automakers like Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan and Isuzu jumped on the truck bed and offered their own lifestyle pick-ups, and it was not long before these big diesel monsters became a common sight even in the most fashionable suburbs.
While Toyota’s market-leading Hilux and the recently launched Mitsubishi Triton have won converts from among traditional car buyers with new standards in saloon-like comfort and styling, Ford is fighting back by staying true to its “Built Tough” heritage.
The all-new Ranger TDCi, which hits the showrooms early next month, announces its arrival by laying claim to the title of “the most powerful pick-up in the country”.
That claim is backed by the all-new Duratorq TDCi 2.5L engine. The package of electronically controlled common rail, direct fuel injection, four valves per cylinder, beefed-up intercooler, double overhead camshafts and the only variable geometry turbocharger fitted to any pick-up truck on the market, works together to produce 105kW (143PS) at 3,500rpm and 330Nm from a low 1,800rpm.
Apart from the impressive figures under the hood, the combination of advanced features promises rapid engine response, strong pulling performance from idle, instant turbocharger response and smooth acceleration.
In the looks department, the Ranger TDCi has stayed true to its heritage of American tough truck design with its bold and tough exterior but, on the inside, it has been completely updated with a modern and refined interior with black, grey and silver trim. “We believe that a truck should look like a truck,” Ford Malaysia managing director Mike Pease declared firmly when unveiling the new Ranger to the media in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday.
Looking like it's ready to work hard and play rough, 16-inch alloy wheels and Bridgestone all-terrain tyres come as standard equipment.
While both power and torque are up by more than 20% over the old engine, Ford claims that fuel economy has also improved 22%.
Continuing with its quest to lead the way, the new Ranger boasts a first-in-class five-speed automatic transmission, mated to a Borg Warner Transfer Case with shift-on-the-fly capability that enables easy switching between 2WD and 4WD.
On paper and in the metal, the new Ranger TDCi looks good in a macho, hairy-chested masculine way. Just how good it is on (and off) the road, we will find out during the test drive very soon. Look out for our follow-up report.
The interior has been significantly upgraded, with a modern instrument panel featuring three sporty aluminium-ringed cluster gauges and round air-con vents while a double DIN CD and MP3 player keeps the driver and passengers entertained.
The seats are ergonomically designed to deliver better comfort through revised seat shape, thicker bolster for better back support, increased seat back length for better body fit and improved distribution of body pressure points, bigger headrests for improved comfort for long-distance travelling.
Although rear cabin space is still smaller than the Hilux and Triton, it is compare favourably with the Isuzu D-Max and Nissan Frontier. Comfort for rear seat passengers is improved with increased recline angle and a pull-down centre armrest.
The new Ranger also offers greater convenience and functionality. Five cup-holders, bottle holders in the front door trim panels, larger console consisting of upper storage for small items and larger lower bin for larger items, are some of the convenient features that have been incorporated into the design.
Another cool first is the unique tray table which can be pulled out from the instrument panel, enabling the front seat passenger to place a lunch box or to execute paperwork while travelling. When not needed, it slides neatly back into its recess just above the 8.1L glovebox.
Safety is well taken care of with two airbags and height-adjustable seatbelts with pre-tensioners in front, and four-wheel ABS brakes and electronic brake force distribution (EBD).
The new Ranger TDCi XLT automatic is priced at RM88,639 (without registration and insurance) while the XLT manual is RM83,739.
In conjunction with the launch of the new Ranger, Ford Malaysia is offering accessories worth RM3,000, consisting of side steps, sports bar and bedliner, at no cost to the first 500 customers who sign up.

Innovative advances will soon make driving safer than ever.
Electronic stability control (ESC), which selectively applies brakes to one or more wheels when a vehicle is about to slide out of control, is the most important safety advance since the safety belt. Recent studies have found that ESC could save as many as 10,000 lives a year if all cars had the system. Beginning in 2012, the federal government will require that all new cars come equipped with ESC. On a smaller scale, backup cameras, another safety system that is becoming more common, can now help prevent accidents with children or objects hidden in a vehicle's rear blind zone.
The industry has gone a long way to make cars that can protect passengers in a crash, so now the trend is toward creating technologies for crash prevention. This will dictate the types of new safety systems we will see in mainstream cars. Most of the following have already turned up in limited use and the others appear to be just over the horizon.
Next-generation stability control. New ESC systems will go further in managing vehicle dynamics. One system, ESC II, is designed to provide slight steering input, together with selective braking and throttle reduction, to maintain control. Rear-wheel steering control through an active multilink suspension is also being looked at to work with next-generation ESC, providing optimum stability.
Pre-collision systems. Currently found on a few vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, these sense a collision before it happens and take action to warn the driver and maximize the safety of all the car's occupants. It detects vehicles in front and can sound an alarm and display warning lights. The system then takes preventive steps such as fully charging the brakes and air bags, closing windows, adjusting seat positions for optimal air-bag effectiveness, and activating safety-belt pretensioners. An advanced pre-collision system in the Lexus LS600h L will detect pedestrians and animals on the road as well as other vehicles. And a camera will watch if the driver is not looking ahead at potential road hazards and sound an alert to get his attention if it senses an impending collision.
Adaptive cruise control. In addition to maintaining a set speed on the highway, this system can automatically maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. It does this by using radar to monitor vehicles in front, and operates the brakes or throttle to slow or accelerate the car as needed. We tested adaptive cruise control in a few vehicles and some of our drivers found the systems to be annoyingly abrupt in their operation. By 2009, Volvo will have a system that works in stop-and-go traffic and will be able to bring a car to a complete stop if necessary.
Lane-departure warning. Cameras that detect the stripes between lanes can determine if a sleepy or inattentive driver has let the vehicle wander off its intended path. The driver is then alerted with a chime and warning light. We tested a system on the Infiniti M35x and found that the chime went off constantly on minor roads. Many of our drivers found it so annoying they turned it off. It was more useful on the freeway.
Brake assist. This system senses when emergency braking is required by gauging how fast the pedal is depressed. When panic braking is detected, brake assist builds up boost to use the vehicle's maximum braking capability even if the driver doesn't push on the pedal hard enough, which might happen in some crash situations.
Blind-spot detection. Many accidents occur when a driver tries to change lanes without being aware that a vehicle is in a blind spot. Audi and Volvo currently have systems that use warning lights connected to cameras or radar on the outside mirrors to tell a driver when a vehicle is in or approaching a blind zone.
Night vision. These systems use infrared technology to allow a driver to see objects, animals, and people well beyond the reach of a car's headlights. We've found them to be useful in some situations, but not ideal. New systems by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus might provide a greater range. In the past, we found these systems to be distracting; we hope that the new ones will be less so.
Rollover mitigation. Roll sensors augment stability control and determine if the vehicle is tipping up on two wheels. If an impending rollover is detected, stability control applies selective braking to suppress the roll motion. If that fails, curtain air bags are deployed and stay inflated for about six seconds to protect occupants from possible impact and to help keep them from being ejected.
Active head restraints. This technology moves the restraints behind a person's head forward during a collision to help absorb energy and prevent whiplash injuries. Neck injuries are the most common kind reported in auto crashes and tests have shown that good head restraints, especially active ones, are effective in preventing them.
Voice recognition. These systems already exist in some higher-end vehicles, where you can use them to control the climate, audio, cell-phone, and navigation systems. Early versions were cumbersome to use and had difficulties recognizing voice commands, but the technology has made great strides. Some voice-recognition systems are now used with Bluetooth technology, which pairs up your cellular phone to the car's audio system. Using voice commands instead of buttons, knobs, and touch screens should reduce driver distraction, which could in turn reduce accidents.
Intelligent networks. Tomorrow's cars will have high-speed data networks that allow communication between various automotive systems and other vehicles. Vehicles will be able to send warnings about hazards or potential accidents on the road. For example, if a driver loses control, the systems needed to stabilize the car will be activated and the nearby cars will be warned. In turn, these cars might activate their pre-collision systems or apply braking to avoid an accident.

A new Lexus LX is coming for 2008, and yup, it's still huge. The trucks 5.7-liter V-8, borrowed from the Toyota Tundra, is rated at 381 hp and over 400 lb-ft of torque, but don't let the ULEV II rating fool you-it will still use a small tanker's worth of gas on the daily commute, even if it doesn't fart as many emissions through the tailpipe.
As we'd expect from Lexus, the big improvements made to the LX 570 are in refinement, with a huge helping of electro-gadgets. Active height control and adaptive variable suspension help reduce body roll, and the LX will lower itself slightly at highway speeds to help aerodynamics. A crawl control feature has also been added for off-roaders, but we're curious to see it if will work for stop-and-go traffic, where this Lexus will most likely spend most of its time crawling.
At least the revised cabin will be a comfortable place to sit in traffic, complete with Bluetooth, XM NavTraffic, and an optional nineteen speaker Mark Levinson stereo. Lexus' park assist system, which has been under fire from the media since it debuted in the LS, will also be offered. The LX570 is everything we expect a new Lexus to be - sleeker, more refined, and full of complicated electronics. But the LX is still a big, heavy, off-road ready truck wearing a badge isn't equated with dirt unless the boys down at the car wash missed a spot. What's the point?
So this is it: the segment changing, ultra-hyped crossover that's going to save the blue oval. The one that was a big hit as the Fairlane concept in 2005, yet still won't see production for another year. And sorry, it doesn't have the cool suicide doors, and the interior has been penny pinched quite a bit.
Overall, the Flex is an impressive package. It takes the quirky, modern designs of the Mini Cooper and Scion xB, then manages to squeeze six or seven people (two interiors will be offered) inside the thing with nearly endless headroom. The ribbed doors recall classic American "woodie" station wagons, but not in a cheesy, retro sort of way. The roof - available in white or silver - is very cool, and standard eighteen inch wheels (with nineteens optional) finish the package.
The interior doesn't make us ooh and ahh like that of the Fairlane concept, but will be the best in the Ford lineup. There will even be options for a houndstooth seat pattern and contrast stitching on the seats and console. As far as buzz-inspiring features go (it wouldn't be a new American car without at least three,) Ford's Sync system leads off the list, offering Bluetooth, a music-holding hard drive, and voice recognition software. In six-passenger versions, a refrigerator will be offered between the second row captain's chairs. Driven by a compressor, it will cool seven 12-ounce cans or two 20-ounce bottles to forty-one degrees. Ford's capless fuel filler system will find its way down to the Flex, too, and ambient lighting will continue its sweep through the Ford family.
Speaking of finding its way places, the Flex will use the same 3.5-liter V-6 found throughout the Ford, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln brands, with a rating here of 260 hp and 245 lb-ft. It will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, capable of routing 100 percent of the engine's torque to either axle, will be available. Stability control with rollover prevention will be standard.
We're not thrilled about Ford's naming choice for the car. To be honest, we sort of liked Fairlane, and it's also really hard to hold back jokes about the Funkmaster Flex Edition Flex, or the Flex Fuel Flex, or even a combination - the Funkmaster Flex Flex Fuel Flex. Say that five times fast. If people can get around the name, the Flex promises to be a decent people mover, and it should sell pretty well. We're excited to see a return from unnecessarily tall SUVs like the Expedition back to something more traditional and wagon like. So is Earth.
We thought that Honda's JDM-spec Civic Type R was the ish, but it looks like Honda was saving its best car for the North American market. No, we don't get a fast tarted-up Civic, we get a full-blown "barely legal" rear-wheel drive race car that is sure to illicit jealous stares and more than a few police-issued citations. Who needs a Civic R sedan when we can have a club racing-inspired S2000 CR prototype?
Honda itself says that the S2000 CR is "the closest thing you can get to a Honda-built racecar with license plate holders and a horn". This race-ready S2K CR may look a bit chunky, but it was built for the specific task of kicking ass at track days, meaning the CR is lighter and stiffer than then the plebian S2K. In addition to looking totally bad-ass, every single piece of the CR's aero kit is functional and is very effective in reducing lift at high speeds.
Chassis-stiffening braces now reside in the cavity that the retractable soft top once called home. As this Honda doesn't need the S2K-standard snap-on canvas roof cover, a race-inspired hard shell now sits directly behind the two bucket seats. But now that the roof is in the "permanent-down" position, what is a S2K CR owner to do when it rains (or more likely, when the track rules require a roof)? Well, the S2000 CR comes with an aluminum hard top roof that you have to manually set on the car and latch down. It's not exactly convenient, but a S2K CR owner isn't purchasing this car for its "ease of use" factor. Let the ladies that don't like getting their hands dirty tool around town in their automatic (both tranny and roof) hard-top MX-5s. When the aluminum roof is not attached to the S2K CR, the Honda is 90 pounds lighter than the normal car.
Don't think that Honda thinks it can get away with adding a body kit and a strut tower bar to a vehicle designed for racing. Honda is an engineering company, after all, and it knows a thing or two about what makes a good race car. The requisite firmer dampers and springs are present and accounted for on the S2K CR, as is a set of super-sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE070 rubber. The S2K CR's back tires are fatter than those of a standard S2K for added traction. Larger stabilizer bars and a S2K CR-exclusive quicker steering rack have also been added to Honda's street-legal race car.
The S2000's high-revving engine is one of the best we've ever experienced, and it looks as if Honda feels that it's good enough for the S2K CR in stock trim. The S2K CR's four-banger still delivers 232 horsepower at a sky-high 7,800 rpm and 161 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,800 revs per minute, and it is still mated to Honda's very, very good six-speed manual transmission. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
Given the unique exterior treatment of the S2000 CR, the car's interior can't be plain. What good is it buying such a vehicle if the cockpit looks just the same as every other S2K on the road? Honda gave the S2K CR's cockpit some "pizzazz" with a set of yellow-stitched fabric seats, "carbon fiber-look" trim and a unique spherical gear shift knob. With the CR being designed first and foremost for the track, things like air conditioning and a radio are options rather than standard equipment.
No prices have been announced, but expect this thing to cost a lot. Even if Honda keeps the MSRP down, we'll bet our paychecks that most dealers will throw some kind of mark up on the S2000 CR. We'll find out when the Honda S2000 CR hits showrooms this fall.

Despite its small size, the Jeep Patriot seats five comfortably. In addition, there are a variety of handy cargo/people handling options. In base price form, the Patriot has a 2.4-liter engine and front-wheel drive. At the top end is the Trail Rated model that offers awd, the 2.4-liter and CVT. This version comes with skidplates, tow hooks and the ability to ford 19 in. of water. Our test drive on unimproved roads around Phoenix proved the Patriot could handle steep upgrades with little effort. But it does share its platform with the Dodge Caliber crossover, so the Patriot's not really as rugged as, say, a Wrangler.
