Can the new Type R sedan get any better? Honda tuner Mugen sure thinks so.
The all-new JDM Honda Civic Type R is a pretty awesome factory-built machine, but there is always a way to make the Championship White sedan even better. And if anyone knows how to improve upon Honda's iconic race-bred front driver, its renowned Honda tuner Mugen.
Mugen Japan recently released a full catalog of dress up and performance parts for the uber Civic sedan. As is the case with all Mugen products, each and every part is thoroughly engineered and tested to produce real performance gains. Even the aero parts are wind tunnel-tested to improve grip, reduce drag and force air into the areas (like the engine or brakes) that need it most. Not only does everyone jock Mugen parts due to these proven performance gains, Honda fans want the stuff as it fits just like OEM equipment.

The next-generation Honda Stream mini-MPV may be sold in the U.S. Having just been redesigned last year, the next Stream won't arrive until 2009, and even then we doubt it will receive anything more than a refreshening. Nevertheless, Honda appears intent to make some money off of this MPV that's based on the same platform as the Civic and CR-V. It's reportedly been a big hit in Japan since it debuted in 2000, though the recent redesign has met with mixed reviews. Though the JDM version can seat up to seven or eight people, Winding Road reports the U.S. version will probably get only two rows of seats. In Japan, the Stream is available with either a R18A 1.8L i-VTEC engine and five-speed auto or an R20A 2.0L i-VTEC engine mated to a CVT transmission. Whether those engines will be offered in the U.S. in unknown, though we would expect at least the larger of the two motors to make the journey to our shores.
Considering Honda's success with the Odyssey in the minivan segment, the Stream may do very well in the U.S. It appears smaller than a minivan, but larger than, say, a Mazda5. The current trend of segment-bending tall wagons and CUVs could carry the Stream right along.

On the whole, the Persona has a no-nonsense appeal about it – it is softer in its approach to ride and handling, no surprise given that it has to appeal to a wider spectrum of buyers, but even with this compliance offers good balance and poise. Linear would best describe it in areas of stability and tracking, and quick directional shifts – to the point of outright provocation – are carried out with a reassuring efficiency.
Block soldiers on, but tranny control unit gets some positive revisions. As for the workings of the powertrain/drivetrain, it does have more zip about it at low-level operation, though the action still really only begins once the revs are up. The auto tranny feels surprisingly good though in other areas of operation, especially in terms of smoothness and transition, and the performance gap between it and the manual is not that marked, at least not in outright feel. A more in-depth performance report is on the cards, soon.
Wheel you grow to appreciate this one, in time? There’s a choice of seven colours for the Persona; six of these – Solid Red, Light Gold, Metal Grey, Tranquility Black, Iridescent White and Blueberry Tea – are available with the launch. The seventh, solid white, will be available from September.

June 27, 2007 - There is an unwritten law saying that every article about a Nissan Sentra SE-R must contain at least one reference to the original B13-chassis car of the same name. Released in the early '90s, the B13 SE-R was designed to be a formidable competitor to cars like the Honda Civic and Acura Integra. The original SE-R boasted a track-proven suspension, a 140 horsepower SR20 motor and a 0-60 time of about 7.6 seconds. It was a very good car for its time; so good that it still has a very loyal following today. Had this Sentra been (a lot) prettier, it may have been good enough to yank the "king of sport compacts" crown away from the mighty Civic.
But the SE-R was never able to achieve the success and status that the Civic still enjoys, and we're guessing that one of the main reasons for this is that the car is kind of ugly. Nissan didn't do much to fix this issue of beauty in subsequent Sentras; every Sentra SE-R that came after the original B13 carried forth that tradition of having a face that not even its mother could love. Not that this lack of sex appeal ever mattered to enthusiasts; the original Sentra SE-R (as well as the B15 chassis SE-R) is (still) a blast to drive. Let the poseurs worry about looking "good" behind the wheel - SE-R drivers want to enjoy the drive itself. If the drive must be done in anonymity, so be it.
The last Sentra was getting quite long in the tooth, and wanting to add a bit of "pizzazz" to the line, Nissan released an all-new Sentra SE-R for '07. In addition to boasting a crisper, more modern design that falls in line with the rest of the Nissan family, this new Sentra boasts more space, more power and more refinement than the SE-Rs that came before it. However, this latest hot-rod Sentra is missing one important ingredient: fun.
Nissan boldly claims that its latest SE-R - specifically the 200 horsepower manual transmission Spec V - is a true competitor to cars like the new Civic Si and Volkswagen GTI. We think that Nissan is being a little too optimistic here. Though they are "purist-unfriendly&q uot; front-drivers, the new Civic Si and GTI are fantastic machines. They certainly aren't the best performance cars on the road, but they still manage to feel fast. With great acceleration, stop-right-now braking and on-rails handling, the Honda and VeeDub manage to provide non-stop driving thrills in an easy-to-use civilized package. We're not saying that the 2007 Sentra SE-R is a bad car, we're just saying that it drives like a Sentra.
On paper, the SE-R Spec V sounds amazing: suspension tuned on the Nurburgring, 200-horsepower 2.5 liter inline four, six-speed manual transmission and a helical limited slip differential all in a $20K package. Hell, even we can't deny that the car is a good value for the money, but we can't say that it's a good "sporty" car. No matter how hard we wring out the car, there's just this lack of a sense of urgency. Acceleration is slow - it oftentimes feels as if 60 of the SE-R's horses left in search of greener pastures. There is plenty of torque though - a full 180 ft.-lbs. of twist - and it does a good job of delivering a pretty generous amount of torque steer. Torque steer is not Eclipse-bad, but it is more pronounced in the Nissan than it is in the VW or Honda.
The SE-R Spec V rides well enough, and it is fun to really push this car through the twisty stuff, but the car's front tires do sometimes feel "disconnected" from the ground when traveling at freeway speeds. The car just doesn't have that "planted" feeling we like. We find ourselves a bit more "on edge" while cruising in this car on the freeway, as we have this unsettling feeling that the steering wheel will go in a direction we don't want if we leave the car to its own devices. We know it's a completely unfair comparison, but the G35 sedan we traded in for this Sentra has that solid and "planted" feeling we crave. Immediately going from a machine that inspires complete confidence in all driving conditions to the SE-R was a bit of a shock to our systems.
But things aren't all doom and gloom for Nissan's "sporty" compact sedan; the SE-R is a really good compact sedan. The interior is quiet and roomy, and the fit and finish of the plastics is actually pretty good. The Sentra SE-R boasts soft-touch material on the arm rests, the seats are comfortable and firm (plus they have decent side support) and the controls are laid out in a way that is both pleasant to look at and easy to use. We could do without the "G" meter (which measures the G forces generated from both acceleration and braking) as we figure that it's best to look at the road ahead if you're going to be doing any sort of hard starts or stops.
The SE-R Spec V also looks pretty good - for a Sentra. Yeah, the car still has that chiseled "French" look about it, but it does have a tasteful aero kit and "right"-sized wheels. The design is still a bit too tall, narrow and top-heavy, but the SE-R does find a way to look a bit more "upscale" than its base model sibling. This newest SE-R definitely doesn't shout "look at me" the way the Civic Si does, and that's sure to appeal to more than a few buyers.
As a compact sedan, the Sentra SE-R Spec V is actually a pretty good car. It has decent looks, a nice and roomy interior and a fair amount of pep. As a sport compact car designed for the "tuner" market, it doesn't quite hit the mark. We know Nissan is capable of much more than this; we'd like to see Nissan make this current SE-R a "regular" Sentra and let the engineers get back to work on making a proper SE-R.
